Satyajit Ray: A Virtual Sketchbook

All images are © Copyright The Ray Family

Previous Next

These fifteen images are selected from the sketchbook of a documentary on the Sitar Maestro Ravi Shankar, who had composed music for Ray's Apu Trilogy. The sketchbook contains thirty pages in all of the shot compositions. Based on the Raga Todi (a morning raga) it begins on a slow note (alaap), then accelerating to a medium and then to a faster madhya, and druta laya rhythmic cycles. These sketches highlight Ray's working methods and the extent of his involvement in designing the visual aspects of his thoughts.

For various reasons, this documentary was never made.
